LampCluster: Scalable LAMP Cluster - Implementation Design

Class Volumes

The LampCluster application contains 5 singleton appliances; one database and four web servers. The boot volume of each appliance is based on the LINUX5 appliance. Below is a list of the 3rd party open source software packages installed on the appliance; most of them are from the CentOS 5 package repository. Theory of Operation

The LampCluster application is a reference design for a basic scalable lamp infrastructure. It is designed for rapid deployment and easy management. This application allows direct ssh access to the apache and mysql server appliances, without the need to access the grid controller.

Build Procedure

Obtain the application descriptors for LampCluster from http://svn.3tera.net/Appliances/LampCluster/build and copy them to the grid.
Update the application version and doc URL.

dbase appliance

Here are the steps needed to create the dbase class from LINUX5 (tested on applogic 2.8.5)

Create an application with a branched LINUX5 and NET in it; configure the NET appliance.
Connect the net terminal of the LINUX5 to the NET appliance.
Save and start the application.

Install rpms:

   yum upgrade
   yum -y install mysql-server perl-DBD-MySQL

Alternatively, instead of using yum, obtain the following rpms from the 3Tera archive (e.g. V:\DEV\applogic\oss\_appliances) and install them:
- mysql-5.0.77-4.el5_4.1.i386.rpm
- mysql-server-5.0.77-4.el5_4.1.i386.rpm
- perl-DBD-MySQL-3.0007-2.el5.i386.rpm
Obtain the following files from the 3Tera appliance SVN http://svn.3tera.net/Appliances/LampCluster/build/dbase_root and copy them to LINUX5:
- /appliance/appliance.sh
- /appliance/change_pwd
- /etc/fstab
- /etc/my.cnf
- /etc/rc.d/init.d/applogic_mysqld
- /etc/ssh/sshd_config
Verify all bash scripts in /appliance are owned root:root and mode 755.
In a shell on LINUX5:
- yum clean all
- rpm --rebuilddb
- mkdir -p /mnt/data /mnt/fs /mnt/log
- rm -rf /var/lib/mysql /etc/localtime /etc/sysconfig/iptables
- ln -s /mnt/data /var/lib/mysql
- ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Pacific /etc/localtime
- chkconfig --add applogic_mysqld
- chkconfig mysqld on
Stop the application.
Manage the boot volume of the branched LINUX5 and cleanup:
- rm -f root/*.rpmnew root/.bash_history root/.lessht tmp/*
- find var/log -type f -exec rm {} \;
Copy the boot volume to the LampCluster application as the boot volume for the dbase class.

srvX appliance

Here are the steps needed to create the srvX class from LINUX5 (tested on applogic 2.8.5)

Create an application with a branched LINUX5 and NET in it; configure the NET appliance.
Connect the net terminal of the LINUX5 to the NET appliance.
Save and start the application.

Install rpms:

   yum upgrade

Stop the application.
Manage the boot volume of the branched LINUX5 and cleanup:

- edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and replace __SRV__ with srv1 (there should be 2 occurences)
Copy the boot volume to the LampCluster application as the boot volume for the srv1 class and repeat for srv2, srv3, and srv4.
For srv2, srv3, and srv4, manage their respective boot volumes and edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and replace srv1 with the respective class name

user volume

Here are the steps needed to create the 4 user volumes for LampCluster

cert

Create a 10MB, ext3 volume name cert for the LampCluster application.

data

Create a 10MB, ext3 volume name data for the LampCluster application.
Manage the volume and execute the following:
- mkdir -p cgi-bin html logs/dbaselogs logs/httplogs logs/naslogs
- chmod 777 -R logs

dbase

Create an application with a MYSQL5.
Create a 50MB, ext3 volume name dbase and assign it to the MYSQL5.
Start the application.
Stop the application.
Copy the volume to the LampCluster application.
Destroy the application.

mon

Create a 10MB, ext3 volume name mon for the LampCluster application.
Manage the volume and execute the following:
- mkdir -p sessions locks logs/apache logs/cce/core logs/cce/collector logs/cav monitor
- chmod 777 -R logs monitor
Obtain the default.desc file from the 3Tera appliance SVN http://svn.3tera.net/Appliances/LampCluster/build/mon_vol and copy it to the monitor directory.

Log Files

The web servers log into /mnt/log/logs/httplogs and the database appliance logs into /mnt/log/logs/dbaselogs. Both are stored on the NAS data volume under logs.
