This document describes the AppLogic Monitor interface. The Monitor provides a visual interface for monitoring performance and resource usage statistics of running AppLogic applications. The user interface of the Monitor is highly interactive and is accessible with a web browser.
Overview
This is the main screen of the AppLogic Monitor. You can use it to add, edit and view system status graphs.
Adding Monitoring to your application
In order to monitor you application you need to add a MON appliance in it.
Any application can be monitored using the MON appliance, just connect the
mon terminal of the appliances you want to monitor to the mon terminal of the MON appliance (
You may use balloon connections as shown on the screenshot above to avoid multiple connection lines in the editor). You need to restart your application after connecting the appliances to MON for the changes to take effect.
Accessing the Monitor Interface
There are two ways of accessing the Monitor interface:- From the Monitor icon of your application in the Editor. Note: To access to Monitor this way, your MON appliance needs to be called
mon(this is the default).
- Through a gateway connected to the web terminal of the MON (you need to configure the user and password properties in your MON appliance, see MON data sheet for details)
Using the Monitor Interface
Views
The Monitor allows you to have multiple view, each containing its own graphs. You can have as many views as you like.
To change the current view select it from the dropdown menu.
- Creates a new view
- Renames the current view
- Deletes the current view
- Makes the current view default so it is opened when you first access the Monitor. When you make changes to a view they are automatically saved so the next time you access the Monitor, you will find the views in the same state.
Graphs
Each view contains graphs displaying one or more performance and resource usage statistics. You can have as many graphs as you want in a view, you can even put one graph over another. GraAdd graph
To add a graph to your current view use the "add graph" button in the Monitor. The following menu will apear:
Each graph can display up to 12 counters. Select a counter to display by choosing:
- Appliace - the name of the appliance you are monitoring
- Entity - the counter group that the desired counter is (e.g. Filesystem, CPU Summary, Memory statistics)
- Counters - the name of the counter to add
Each counter has its own color, you can change the color by selecting the counter in Selected Counter and select a color from the color dropdown on the right.
The actual look of the graph as it will be shown in your view can be seen in the Preview section. Each change you make to the graph is immediately propagated to the Preview.
In the Graph Preferences section you can specify the following properties:
- size - specifies the size of the graphs. Its a good practice to use medium or large sized graph when displaying more than one counter per graph.
- pace - specify the pace at which the counter is updated. The larger the pace, the more history you see (and the less accurate the graph is)
- alarm - specify minimum and maximum values for the counters. When a counter is outside the given limits an alarm is displayed at the upper left cornet of the graph
- scale - specify the scale of the graph; leave blank for auto-scaling (the scale will change if with the displayed values)
- legend - enable graph legend - shows current value for each counter as well as its name (it can be customized). The legend can be shown in 1, 2, 4 and 8 colums depending on the graph size
- timeline (checkbox) - shows the timeline along the horizontal axis
- scale (checkbox) - shows the scale along the vertical axis
Edit graph
To edit an existing graph click on its "edit" icon in the top right corner. This will open the same menu that is used for adding graphs where you can change all properties of the graph and observe the changes in the Preview section.
- To specify a title for the graph click on its Title bar and will turn into an input field where you can enter the graph title. You can edit that later by clicking the title bar.
- To edit the graph legend, click on a counter name in the legend and it will turn into an input field where you can enter/edit counter name.
You can also edit the graph legend and graph title in the Preview section when adding/editing graphs.
Move graph
You can move the graphs in you view and arrange them according to you preferences. To move a graph, click on its canvas and drag it to the desired place.
Pause graph
If you need to pause a graph (so you can examine the counter values or take a screenshot) click on the pause button in the view title bar. Click again to resume counter monitoring.
Collapse graph
You can collapse a graph when you don`t want to view the counter data (for example to free space on the monitor canvas). Clicking the collpapse icon in the top right corner will leave only the graph`s title bar visible.
To expand the graph back, click on the expand button.
Lights out
You can change the color of the background to black (i.e., turn the lights out) by clicking on the 'light' button in the view title bar. Click again to make the background white again (i.e., turn the lights back on). This is how the monitor looks when the lights are turned off:
